Changing season and winter are not my friends. As much as I love cooler Autumn weather, dark nights, fireplace and cozy chunky knits and long pants, my skin is not impressed. I have super sensitive skin, I have eczema and I get really dry skin in winter. So, I am back in my kitchen for some DIY skincare products! I decided to try rice milk cleanser for it’s anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory properties. I have never actually made this myself before, but I remember purchasing something similar from Thailand years ago. Now, when I made my DIY version, the scent took me right back to Thailand. If you have been to Thailand, or some other South East Asian countries, you might recognize the scent of jasmine flowers and cooking rice in the evenings. When I lived in Bangkok, I used to love the smell of jasmine and rice in the dark nights, when I walked home from work. It was magic. There’s just something very nurturing in the scent of milk and rice.
I used rice milk and brown rice for this rice milk cleanser, but you could use almond milk or any other plant-based milk of your choice. Ideally you would like to use home made milk, to avoid any extra fillers, but it’s not absolutely necessary. You can also use brown rice flour, or use brown rice and grind it into coarse flour. The more coarse you leave it, the better it works as a scrub/ for exfoliating.
Brown rice flour has anti-inflammatory benefits that help treat sensitive skin, while the rice milk provides vitamin A and calcium. The grains do not dissolve easily in liquid, and help exfoliate your skin while they soothe it.
1/2 cup organic brown rice flour/ ground brown rice
1/4 cup organic rice milk (or other plant-based milk)
- Mix the milk and flour together to form a paste.
- Rub gently onto skin. Leave on for few minutes, then rinse with warm water.
